Meet the ESA experts | The Moon

Date

Description

ESA scientific experts were interviewed as part of the Moon Camp project and provide answers to questions about lunar exploration in a series of videos.

Resources on the Moon

It is well known that the Moon is a ball of rock covered with a multitude of craters. As breathtaking as it may be in the night sky or in photographs taken from orbit, the lunar landscape is far from paradisiacal. In reality, it is barren, gray, dusty, and dark. Are there resources to be found on the Moon that cannot be seen from Earth? In this video, lunar scientist Alexandre Meurisse discusses the resources that can be found on the Moon.

Moon 3D printing

Today, it is possible to print any object in 3D: tools, buildings, and even cells or food! This 3D printing technology works on Earth as long as the materials are available, but how could it be done on the Moon or in space? Could we 3D print a lunar base? ESA engineer Advenit Makaya explains the 3D printing process in this video.

Living on the Moon

The Apollo mission proved that humans could work on the lunar surface, but the longest stay on the Moon to date has lasted just 22 hours. Could we spend more time on the Moon? And why not live there, as astronauts do on board the ISS? In the video below, lunar technology expert Bérangère Houdou describes what life on the Moon might be like.

Moon exploration

It was 50 years ago: the Apollo mission and man’s first step on the moon. Since then, no one has forgotten this natural satellite of our planet, Earth, and several scientific missions have enabled us to learn more about the Moon and the possibility of humans returning there. James Carpenter, an ESA scientist, gives an overview in the video below of these various missions and the future of lunar exploration.
